Skimmed Milk Or Full Fat

Very often the very first thing we’ll grab from the fridge in the morning is some milk for our coffee. Although it’s unlikely to be something most will think about, the cap on that bottle of milk could play a major role in improving your health. But it might surprise you to learn which is healthier and can help you lose weight.

Should You Get Whole Milk Or Skim Milk?

In America, there has been some research done that strongly indicates those who choose the milk jug with a blue lid are less likely to get diabetes than those who choose a different kind. The study that was done by Tufts University had more than 3,000 people in the study and they ranged in ages between 30 and 75 years old. This study found that those who had consumed full-fat dairy had almost 50% less risk of developing diabetes than those who were given low-fat versions or skimmed versions of the milk.

Dr Mozaffarian concluded that based on the findings, the recommendation for consuming skimmed milk and other low-fat dairy is ill-advised. According to the results of the study, there was no evidence to support the idea that low-fat dairy contributed to the poor health of a person. The doctor recommended that those recommendations be removed.

Most of us have been told over the last several years that we should reduce the amount of fat we consume and that in turn would reduce our waistlines but the studies done in recent years have found just the opposite. They show that when we remove fat from the diet it leads to weight gain and we consume more carbs and sugar which in turn puts us at a higher risk of developing diabetes. This, of course, is the opposite of what has been told to most of us.

Another study put into the American Journal Of Clinical Nutrition chose to study obesity in women who consumed low fat versus full-fat dairy. They were surprised when they found that those who consumed the high-fat dairy reduced their risk of obesity by close to 10%. That meant that those who were consuming the low-fat dairy increased their risk.

Government guidelines say that children should drink low-fat or skimmed milk after about age 2 to reduce saturated fat. The recommendation is that they get nutrition from other types of food. Because the low-fat milk has less fat in it, it means it also lacks fat-soluble vitamins such as Vitamin E and vitamin A. This means that those who are consuming the low-fat versions are missing out on these important nutritional elements.

All of this information means that it might be better to grab the milk jug with the blue top. Based on the studies it would mean those using the milk with the blue top have a reduced chance of developing type 2 diabetes as well as reducing their waistline. Since most of us want to lose weight and eliminate the risk of diabetes as much as possible, then it makes sense to get the full-fat milk. The final conclusion is that full-fat milk is the healthier choice for weight loss.
